Art in Country of Tokyo 2019 is a new generation of international art projects that portray the city of Tokyo not as a large metropolis but as a region, bringing together the individuality and nature of the various areas outside the 23 wards through art.
The word "country" originates from the Latin phrase "contrata terra," (meaning "the land over there") and it is a word that represents the indication of both a nation and a region (or rural area). It depicts the diversity of Tokyo as both the capital city of Japan and a region concentrated with nature symbolic of Japan - its mountains, fields, and ocean.
Recently, We often encounter art events held in vacant houses or locations scheduled to be demolished and constructed, rather than in the white cube galleries and museums that conventionally serve as exhibition spaces. Being held for the first time, AICOT not only focuses on the environmental resources of the region but also uses public facilities, such as lecture rooms and the region's conference rooms that, at first glance, seem unfitting for a contemporary art display. By exhibiting the artwork in these areas, AICOT separates ourselves from their trends, creating new "places," and searching for new ways to look at "artwork."
At AICOT 2019, we invite international groups and artists concentrated around "EXPERIMENTAL FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL IN SEOUL," a film festival held for over 15 years in Seoul, Korea. Exhibitions of contemporary art and performances will be held while promoting the use of public and regional-specific resources.
An artist who grew up in Higashikurume will use the image of his family to present a work that will make you think about the particular sense of community that exists in the area. There will be a performance that involves projection mapping on the rocks of the outdoor hot spring next to the Shikinejima Ocean, as well as an introduction of the artist that will attempt to "exhibit" performances throughout the exhibition period.
In addition, AICOT will also have workshops for projection mapping in Kiyose and for augmented reality in Kouzushima. The results of these two workshops will be presented at their opposite locations, exchanging the two vastly different regions. We hope that this will bring new opportunities for creativity.
The biggest surprise is that admission is completely free of charge. However, since the event locations are spread apart and details will only be provided on the map, we strongly recommend you purchase a map.
We look forward to seeing you at AICOT 2019.
